Artist Wanted! #1

Posted in Artist Wanted! on September 19, 2009 by leeatard

It’s no secret that I love comic books. In fact, it’s been a little dream of mine to write comics for several years now. The only thing stopping me? No artistic talent whatsoever. I can draw a mean stick person….but that’s about it. Hopefully, that’s what you come in. I’ve got a ton of ideas for comics, webcomics, one-shots, etc. that I’d love to see someone give life to. Every now and again, I’ll post an idea here to let potential artists get a feel for the kind of stuff I want to create. If you think you’d like to work with me, or even if you have an idea for something you might need fleshed out, please drop me a line.

My first idea is a comedy one-shot from the video game Metal Gear Solid. Read the script after the jump!

Not Dead!

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , on June 21, 2009 by leeatard

I know, I know. It’s been ages since I checked in here. Apologies. Real life gets in the way of what we actually want to do sometimes. However, my time hasn’t been completely wasted working for “the man” (I’m so street) lately. I’ve actually had a few free moments to work on a project or two that I’ve been meaning to get around to forever. Can’t talk about them just yet, but they’re awesome. Trust me. I think.

You MAY have noticed Splunkers The Cat has a new writer on board. That’s right, my good friend Eddie has thrown his hat into the ring with some super awesome story-time action! Leave tons of comments for him and let him know just how much the first part of Death Merchant got to you. Look for part two (and hopefully more from Eddie) soon!

That’s it for now, kiddies. Stay tuned.

I’m sure everyone and their mother has seen the original by now.

Oh, Xzibit. He loves putting things in things. So people can do stuff while they do stuff.

Thanks to Krissy for the book and to Eddie for the picture.

Ain’t I A Stinker?

I was bored at work the other day, so I started surfing the local TV-news sites (anyone that knows me knows that I don’t give a crap about real world news, but it was a slow day and I had nothing better to do). One of the top stories was about some pot that was found in a local bus station. One of the first things I noticed was this image…

This Week’s Pull List (Get Your Mind Out Of The Gutter)

I only just read all of my stack of comics for this week, and I thought it would be fun to give a mini-rant for each one.

GeNext #1 – Here’s a play-by-play of what went through my head upon discovering GeNext. “SWEET! Is that Nate Grey on the cover?!? I had no idea they were bringing him back! Wait, that’s not Nate Grey. And why does Colossus look less buff? This comic is dumb.”
I think I lost brain cells reading this book.

Deadpool: Suicide Kings #2 – I still can’t help but love Deadpool. And I’m especially glad that Marvel’s trying to integrate the Punisher into the main universe. There is a serious headscratcher at the end though. I’m not gonna spoil it, but I will say that I had no idea Deadpool even knew “that guy.”

Secret Warriors #4Nick Fury is awesome again. This issue sets the tone for an upcoming war with Hydra. I can’t help but feel that the title is a bit misleading though. It seems like with each issue that hits, we see less and less of the “Secret Warriors.”

Wolverine #73 – It’s no Old Man Logan, but I really chuckled at the day-by-day showing of Wolvie’s life with the X-Men/Avengers/whatever. The biker stuff is pretty interesting too.

Dark Reign Hawkeye #2 – I think books like this are the main selling point of Dark Reign. I mean, it’s nice to see the Avengers trying to fight their way to Osborn, but it’s especially awesome to finally see what goes on on the other side of the superpowered fence.

Dark Reign: Young Avengers #1 – Does this remind anyone else of a Young Avengers story arc we were promised before the book was “delayed” way back when? At any rate, I already hate the new team (not because they’re evil, but because they’re kind of lame). Ironically though, I do enjoy the team dynamic (or lack thereof). Pretty refreshing to see nothing go right for a team from it’s onset.

Black Panther #4 – Who is the new Black Panther? I find myself caring less and less. I just want T’Challa back.

What I’m Playing Right Now: Devil May Cry 4

devil-may-cry-4-main

I just picked up a new Xbox 360 Arcade console (because my last one crapped out….a month after the warranty ran out), and was anxious to dig into the small stack of games I had amassed while waiting to get the new system (Is it just me, or do 360s seem to die RIGHT when you get a brand new game or two?). The first game I wanted to get into was Devil May Cry 4.

I’ve been a fan of the series for a while, and was really anxious to get to try the newest installment (especially after trying the demo and having so much fun with the Devil Bringer). However, it would have to wait, as the $59.99 price tag scared me off. It’s very rare I buy a game at full price. Hell, the only Devil May Cry game I bought was the special edition of Dante’s Awakening (It debuted at $19.99). Luckily, I was able snatch a copy on GameTZ for a fair price.

So far, the game is well worth the money. The Devil Bringer is just as much fun to play around with as it is in the demo. Honestly, I use it more then I do my sword to finish off bad guys. In fact, the first thing I do when a new enemy appears is try out the grab on them to see if there’s any special animation. Other then that, it’s classic Devil May Cry gameplay with a few new moves and enemy types.

Speaking of which, the worst enemy in this game is the camera. Especially during boss fights, Nero would disappear off-screen somehow, and I would have to frantically move the controller around until he popped back up….or the enemy would just knock him around first and make him appear for me. Luckily, you can continue right before each boss, so you can “play test” them before you actually fight them. The only other gripe is that it takes FOREVER to level up anything outside of your health bar. Each level gives you so many style points based on how quickly you beat the level, how many bitchin’ combos you pulled off, how many times you died, etc. Unfortunately, even on a “B” rank (which seems to be my average) you never get enough to purchase anything in between missions. I’m already on mission 7 and I JUST get enough points to buy Air Hike (the first thing I purchase in any Devil May Cry game)?!? What the hell? Granted, the game DOES give you the ability to get full refunds on abilities and use them on others, but I don’t want to have to micro-manage each mission before attempting it. Especially since I would have to PLAY the mission first to know what I’m dealing with. Luckily, that’s not a major issue, since you can just re-play any mission any time. But at this rate, it feels like I’m really going to have to go back and grind a lot just to fight the final boss. Which would totally piss me off if the game wasn’t so damn fun.

So, what’s everyone else playing right now?

One Of These Things Is Exactly Like The Others

I love my friends. We have some of the best conversations. Not too long ago, me and a buddy had an hour long discussion about the anime Bleach, and how it could relate to another Japanese import we all know and love. Yes, I’m talking about Power Rangers. It makes sense if you really sit down to think about it.

The original team of Power Rangers was just some of the older soul reapers before Rukia even met Ichigo.

Byakuya was the red ranger, the one everyone looked up to.
Renji was the black ranger, ’cause of the bitchin’ cool shades.
Rukia was the pink ranger, ’cause she liked Ichigo.
Retsu (slug lady) was the yellow ranger…because she’s Asian I guess.
Whitey-chan (Hitsugaya) was the blue ranger.

Then Ichigo, our green ranger, came along. He didn’t get along with anyone at first, but got to know everyone better over time.

After that, a new team came together, led by Ichigo (now the white ranger since he lost his original powers).
Quincy Archer’s the new blue ranger.
Renji’s now the red ranger, but nowhere near as cool as the first red ranger was.
Orihime’s the new pink ranger, and Ichigo’s new love interest.
Rukia’s the yellow ranger now….because she’s Asian.
Chad’s the black ranger….even though he’s not black (but close enough, no?).

The leader of the soul reaper captains is Zordon.

Kon is Alpha-5.

Hat-And-Clogs is Ninjor. Yoruichi is the chick from the movie with the whistling batons.

Grimmjow is Goldar.

Grand Fisher is Rita, and Aizen is Lord Zedd.

Tosen and Ichimaru are those useless henchman of Rita/Zedd’s that never really did ANYTHING useful.

Ichigo and Chad’s two buddies that can see ghosts, but don’t do much else are Bulk and Skull.

The Espada are the monsters of the week. When they “grow” by releasing their blade, the soul rangers have to unleash their zords (bankai) to stop them.

The Vizards are the alien rangers.

Go ahead, tell me I’m wrong. Think this is all a coincidence? In the American dub, Ichigo is voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch….the second black Power Ranger.

Oh, and Kenpachi’s the gold ranger. Because he’s just that awesome.

Seriously…

In what fucked up incestuous pedo-happy universe is THIS a good idea?!?

Oh Sally, say it ain’t so.

“Thanks” to my friend Rudy for the video.

I love memes. They may get overused and stale within the first month of discovering them, but dammit I think they should be milked for all they have. In this respect, I’ve taken it upon myself to add to the growing pile of lolcats and advice dogs out there. My first entry stars a certain governator…

Some of you may know me, some of you may not. Most of you probably don’t care.

Oooh…that sounded a bit self-demoralizing didn’t it.

We’re off to a great start here at splunkersthecat.com! I’m Lee Mangrum, the site founder (and so far, the only content generator. That may change in the future). This site is dedicated to everything I create: pictures, blogs, videos, podcasts, whatever. Now, this isn’t just “Lee Mangrum’s big media dump page.”

Ok, that’s exactly what it is. Hope you like what you see, and look for more content to come very soon!
